Media hype and pantomime
From Unfocusgroup.org
Celebrity culture – shared experiences that bond us all (e.g. Jade Goody's cancer) can strike a chord with people who have been touched by it. But shared experience alone does not necessarily mean that we have anything in common.
In the old days, celebrities who were no longer talented in their field – such as retired sports starts – would end up doing pantomime, which I always thought was a fair way of making a living. However, these days, the world seems to be one big pantomime, with reality tv stars and politicians alike sharing the same stage. Meanwhile in the real world, people are losing their jobs and there is practically no industry left in this country. Because we place a higher value on celebrities than we do on the people who feed and clothe us. This is not right.
