Why aspire to emulate other people - why not emphasise originality, thinking for oneself instead of slavish discipleness

also the idea is now that we only respect people with demonstrable ability or talent, and not just because they are in a particular position, because they could have gotten that position by luck or corruption rather than talent. If you do not know a person well (i.e. a celebrity), you have no idea of the real story behind their success. They may have gotten there by trampling over others.

public opinion is changing (mps expenses, banking etc - no longer hero worship)
