Combating desertification

The idea is to make the entire world habitable by putting lots of effort into combating desertification, and planting lots of trees. Irrigation will be a bummer, but many desert countries have lots of oil, which is good.

  • Cut canals from sea into the desert. Build inner lakes.
  • These would be saline as they are sourced from the sea; however, we can use solar-heat-mirror desalination (reflect sun's heat to boil water & distil).
  • Irrigate land & grow forests.
  • Transpiration from trees would form clouds, and would rain
  • Canals can criss-cross the country with water.

observations

  • Most desert countries have energy reserves that can be used to cut the canals.
  • Manpower is cheap to cut the lakes
  • A version of this seems to be happening in Mali, where they are re-cutting dead rivers for irrigation.
